Road Safety - A Social Responsibility

Debmarine Namibia embarked upon a long road safety awareness campaign to promote and inculcate road-safety consciousness in the country, primarily among its employees, but also aimed at drivers, passengers and the community members at large. Road safety and accident prevention are recurring, frequently explored subjects, although not always from the same perspective.

The campaign conducted by Debmarine Namibia, was firstly rolled out internally among the company’s employees. The Company routinely captures and monitors road-related accident statistics of its employees and came to the realisation that with the rise in road-related risky behaviour, employees are more at risk away from the workplace than in the workplace.

This led to the introduction of the internal Safety Ripple Campaign, designed to sensitise employees and create dialogue on the various aspects of risky road behaviour in an effort to encourage responsible safety culture and behaviour. Today, the Debmarine Namibia Facebook page published its locally produced video clip “Driving Safely Is A Social Responsibility”, which is a social experiment dealing with vehicle maintenance awareness. This is part of the Company’s external campaign, as a responsible corporate citizen to encourage other corporates and citizens to weigh in on addressing road safety, as a social responsibility.

Road Safety requires not only driver fitness, but also vehicle fitness. A well maintained vehicle not only speaks volumes about the owner, but also will protect its driver and passengers on the road. The video shows the diverse reactions of Namibian drivers/passengers from all walks of life, when suddenly being confronted with possible drastic consequences of vehicle failure on roads. It is a clear call-to-action to most Namibian drivers to regularly service their vehicles, especially in December, as fatal accidents are punctually on the rise at this time of the year.

Spotting risky behavior is part of the campaign, aiming to make the community more aware of the fundamental importance of vehicle maintenance, which could alone reduce road fatalities. For every person killed in traffic crashes, many more suffer serious injuries with life-changing consequences, such as the story showcased in the Debmarine Namibia’s video. Serious injuries are not only more common, but also often more costly to society because of long-time rehabilitation and healthcare needs.

While it may be obvious that accident-related events are linked to risky behaviour, in Namibia, rollover crashes are mainly attributed to speeding, fatigue, alcohol, but also worn-out tyres, resulting in the loss of vehicle control.

Drunk driving is only one of the leading causes of road accidents and it contributes significantly to accidents on the road. This led Debmarine Namibia to donate breathalyzers testing kits to the Private Sector Road Safety Forum and the MVA Fund worth N$ 130 000. The donation aims to support efforts to reduce drunk driving accidents and save lives.

Police cars get new enhancement features

General Motors Chevrolet Tahoe police cruisers will get new set of safety features. The centerpiece is a new Enhanced Driver Assist Package that’s the first of its kind for a pursuit-rated vehicle. The option package is built around five distinct technologies and features:

Low Speed Forward Automatic Braking: This feature, which has never been offered on a pursuit-rated vehicle before, automatically applies the brakes to help reduce a collision's severity if the vehicle is traveling at a low speed and the system detects that a front-end collision is imminent and the driver has not already applied the brakes.

Forward Collision Alert: This system uses radar and a forward-looking camera to measure the closing speeds between a vehicle and objects in its path. If a driver-adjustable threshold is passed, the system triggers a visual alert and audible beeps or seat pulses, if equipped.

Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning: This feature provides gentle steering wheel turns to help drivers avoid crashes due to unintentionally drifting out of their lanes when they are not actively steering and the turn signals are not activated.

Safety Alert Driver Seat: The GM-patented Safety Alert Seat gives drivers the option of getting haptic seat-bottom vibration pulses instead of audible crash avoidance alerts.

Power Adjustable Pedals: Combined with the Tahoe PPV’s standard 10-way power driver seat and tilt wheel, power adjustable pedals help drivers of all sizes find their optimal driving position for comfort and control.

Toyota wins big in Texas with Green Energy

Toyota Motor North America’s (TMNA) headquarters campus in Plano, Texas has officially achieved LEED Platinum from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). Jonathan Kraatz, executive director, USGBC Texas Chapter, presented the prized Platinum plaque to Jim Lentz, TMNA president and chief executive officer, today at the new campus. LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is the most widely used green building rating system in the world. Toyota’s new campus is the largest commercial LEED Platinum project in the state of Texas, to date.

Toyota Motor North America achieved LEED Platinum Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council for green building techniques, such as sustainable landscaping. The 8.79-megawatt solar power system produces enough energy to power 1,200 homes per year and provides up to 33 percent of daily electric needs for the Plano campus.

“At Toyota, we have a longstanding commitment to sustainability and preserving our natural resources,” said Lentz. “With the installation of greenspaces, thousands of solar panels, a massive rain water capture system, and natural light wells, we have designed our new headquarters to reflect the local habitat and enhance its biodiversity. Recognition as a LEED Platinum facility is a testament of our efforts to become a model for energy efficiency and sustainability, and speaks to our challenge to ourselves to create a net positive impact on the planet by 2050.”

“USGBC is proud to award LEED Platinum to Toyota, for their thoughtfulness in their campus energy planning and space design as well as the overall net positive impact on the community and environment,” said Kraatz. “Our mission at USGBC has challenged organizations to move faster and reach further than ever before, and Toyota’s new Texas campus is a great example of what can be accomplished with the right leadership.”

Grid energy offset by Texas wind farm renewable energy credits
Repurposed Rainwater
State-of-the-art rainwater capture system will provide up to three months of water supply for irrigation use
Cistern water storage with a capacity to hold 400,000 gallons of harvested rain water
Estimated to save more than 11 million gallons of potable (drinking) water annually
Excess drain water will be collected and repurposed for sanitary facility use
Recycling
More than 99 percent of the construction waste was recycled
Construction waste was sorted offsite at North Texas’ first Construction and Demolition waste processing facility

Sustainable Landscaping
Exterior landscaping features drought-tolerant, North Texas indigenous plants like savannah, oaklands and wildflower meadows
Campus landscape will provide a natural habitat for endangered pollinators and monarch butterflies
Approximately 1,300 trees planted onsite by Toyota
More than 80 mature trees saved or relocated onsite, including a 100-year-old oak tree
Landscaping will be managed without expensive mowing, fertilizers, chemicals or artificial irrigation

Ford Motor Company hosts Driving Skills for Life (DSFL) programme in Nigeria

Ford Motor Company, in conjunction with its distributor Coscharis Motors, hosted the Driving Skills for Life (DSFL) programme in Lagos, Nigeria. This highly-acclaimed programme was implemented for the first time in Nigeria in 2016 in order to improve driving skills and road safety in Nigeria.

The 2017 edition comprised of a special training session for members of the Nigeria Auto Journalists’ Association (NAJA). The DSFL programme featured driving on a 4x4 trail requiring the use of four-wheel drive, as well as a special presentation on child safety in the car.

Participants had the opportunity to learn about the features that the Ford Ranger offers such as safety, departure angles, brake distance on gravel and anti-lock braking system (A.B.S) and how to use other four-wheel drive functions such as traction control, locking differential and drive train.

L-R: Motebang Mokoena, Ford Driving Skills For Life (DSFL) Trainer; Abiona Babarinde, General Manager Marketing & Corporate Communications, Coscharis Group; Derek Kirkby, Ford - DSFL Director; and Felix Mahan, Brand Manager Ford, Coscharis Motors; at the DSFL training held in Lagos recently.

Drinking and driving will be under the spotlight again, with the use of the drunk-driving goggles. These goggles imitate a drunk driver and simulate how alcohol actually impairs driving skills.

NAJA, the umbrella body for all journalists in Nigeria covering the automobile and automotive industry, is already setting a good example by insisting that its members undergo annual training and Ford’s DSFL is part of this programme. This initiative has already been highly praised by the Nigerian Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (NAMA).

“Against this background, Ford is very pleased to be able to offer its proven road safety tool in the form of the Driving Skills for Life programme,” commented Abiona Babarinde, General Manager - Marketing and Corporate Communications, at Ford’s distributor, Coscharis Motors.

“This time around we are concentrating in working with the local motoring journalists and we trust they will transfer all their learning on the DSFL course to their readers and viewers to spread the importance of safe driving and road safety.”

Ford launched DSFL in the United States in 2003 and the programme has been improved and adapted to suit local conditions in many other global markets over the years. It was launched in South Africa in 2014, introduced into Angola in 2015 and last year it was rolled out in Nigeria, Uganda, and Kenya.

Ford DSFL, is a comprehensive programme aimed at providing new skills and information to newly licensed drivers and improve the defensive driving ability of experienced drivers. The programme also addresses both the inexperience of young drivers as well as issues surrounding distracted driving, thereby, enhancing eco-driving to personal safety and the environment.

2017 BMW 5 SERIES EARNS IIHS TOP RATINGS

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety named the 2017 BMW 5 Series a “Top Safety Pick +”, continuing the company’s long-standing commitment to offering class-leading safety. The seventh generation BMW 5 Series qualified for the “TSP+” thanks to its performance in five different crash tests – small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraints. Receiving the Institute’s highest rating, for an optional front crash prevention system with ‘Superior’ rating, as well as the ‘Good’ rating for headlights.

The latest generation BMW 5 Series is praised by the IIHS for its body and structure design, boosting its performance in the small overlap front crash test. Results from the test indicate that the driver space is well maintained with only 5 inches of maximum intrusion at the footrest, showing a low risk of any significant injuries in a real-world crash of the same severity. Additionally, the 5 Series available Frontal Collision Warning with either City Collision Mitigation or with Extended Collision Mitigation earn “Superior” ratings in front crash prevention, both avoiding collisions during testing at 12 mph and 25 mph.

Ford Expedition makes a big and bold return

Ford has unveiled its biggest SUV, the Expedition, which is both larger and lighter than the aging version which was somewhat a gas guzzler. The Expedition promises better fuel economy and new features when it goes on sale later in 2017.

The 2018 Expedition is Ford’s first complete reworking of the big SUVs in about 15 years. The Expedition grows four inches in length with more three inches in the wheelbase. The bigger Expedition Max – previously called the Expedition EL – grows one inch. Its wheelbase is unchanged.

Both SUVs will be powered by a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V-6 engine linked to a 10-speed automatic transmission. Ford expects the combination to improve fuel economy and give it class-leading towing capacity. Like Ford’s F-series pickups, it adopts all aluminum body panels and has a new frame.

RANGE ROVER SPORT SVR: GRIPPING ACCELERATION IN ALL CONDITIONS

Range Rover Sport SVR delivers devastating pace in all driving conditions. Merging legendary all-terrain capability with 405kW of V8 power and advanced traction technology provides Land Rover’s fastest vehicle with unique real world performance.

Since going on sale in 2015, the Range Rover Sport SVR has showcased the abilities of Jaguar Land Rover Special Vehicle Operations. This super-SUV has contributed to more than 285,000 second-generation Range Rover Sports being delivered to customers around the world since the ranged was launched in 2014. Many buyers will have been attracted by the 0-100km/h time of only 4.7 seconds.

When the perfect traction offered by clean, dry asphalt isn’t available, most sports cars immediately suffer from a lack of grip, stability and performance. But no sports car has the benefit of Land Rover’s legendary all-terrain know-how.

The intelligent system automatically selects the appropriate driving mode to suit traction conditions including: General Driving, Dynamic, Grass/Gravel/Snow, Mud and Ruts, Sand, and Rock Crawl. The driver can also use a simple rotary controller on the centre console to choose a specific mode. On Asphalt, SVR has been timed at 4.7 seconds, on grass; 5.5 seconds, on gravel; 5.3 seconds while on snow; 11.3 seconds.

“The Range Rover Sport SVR is famed for its on-road performance but this hasn’t been achieved at the expense of customary Land Rover capability,” said Driver Darren Jones, Stability Applications Leader, Jaguar Land Rover. “Our Terrain Response 2 technology takes the stress out of driving in all conditions.”
